Did you know that a surprisingly high percentage of
property/casualty insurance claims are fraudulent? Behind
tax evasion, insurance fraud is the second most costly
white-collar crime in America? Add it all up and insurance
fraud costs hard-working people like you billions of dollars
each year. People who defraud property/casualty insurance
companies not only steal from insurers but we all pay the
price for their crimes. Not only does fraud cause higher
insurance rates, but it victimizes you, your coworkers and your
neighbors…we are all victims.
What can you do?
Here is a quick list of things to look for at the scene
of an accident or thereafter:
- Take photographs of the entire scene, involved
vehicles, specific damage areas, people in the
vehicle(s), emergency personnel working the scene (if
applicable).
- Note if any of the involved vehicles has
pre-existing damage that is unrelated to your accident.
- Note the number of passengers in each involved
vehicle.
- Report any persons who were not passengers in the
vehicles that may attempt to add themselves on to the
police report as passengers after the incident.
- Report being approached by uninvolved parties
(except verifiable witnesses) that solicit you or the
other parties involved at the scene.
- Report unsolicited telephone calls or personal
visits.
The State of Florida mandates the following: F.S. 817.234
“Any person who knowingly and with intent to injure,
defraud, or deceive any insurer files a statement of claim
or an application containing any false, incomplete, or
misleading information is guilty of a felony of the third
degree.”
